Beachboys ProgramFrom the turn of the century to the late 1950s, spirited, ocean-wise and charming local boys gathered on Waikiki beach and shared their knowledge of the ocean and the Hawaiian culture with visitors from around the world. This tradition is being carried on at The Orchid. Throughout the day and on some evenings, guests young and old alike, can learn more about the islands' cultural legacies and hidden treasures from The Orchid's Beachboys. These Beachboys demonstrate Hawaiian arts and crafts - using coconut and hala (pandanus) fronds; teach outrigger canoe paddling - a great form of upper-body cardiovascular training; and lead hikes through a treasure trove of archaeological sites (history of the petroglyphs, shelter caves and fishponds). The Orchid Beachboys have a passion for sharing ocean cultural and history with visitors and locals alike. All have a history of "working the beach."Gary Media is lead beach boy. He has 35 years of experience on the beach. He began his "beach boy career" in 1961 at the old Kaua'i Surf in Nawiliwili. In 1964, he moved to Santa Monica, CA. Then in 1968 he took a job at the Moana Beach Concession in Waikiki. From 1972-75, he was a city and county lifeguard. In 1981, he moved to the island of Hawai'i as beach and pool attendant at the former Sheraton Royal Waikoloa. In 1996, he became The Orchid's first beach boy. He is an avid surfer and paddler. PetrogylphsThe Fairmont Orchid, Hawai'i is located right next to a Petrogylph site -- a 20 minute walk to the north of the resort along the coast. See the Concierge for more details and instruction on how to get there.Petroglyphs date as far back as the first settlers on the Hawaiian Islands, in the 4th century AD. They were the earliest written forms of communication with the gods, the spirits, and with fellow travellers and viewers. The figures were most frequently carved on the smooth pahoehoe lava. Other stone sources were large boulders and the walls of lava tubes. No one knows for sure what all the different symbols and figures mean. No one knows for sure the exact date of each petroglyph, or why there are so many on the Big Island. One thing we do know: They are never randomly located. Isolated petroglyphs might mark a burial site, or an important trail junction. Groups of petroglyphs often accentuate a powerful place on the land. The Hawaiians believed that mana, the cosmic force, was concentrated and available in specific locations, which became places of prayer and respect.
Honu or Green Sea TurtlesHonu, or Green Sea Turtles, can often be seen sunning themselves on the rocky shorefront in front of The Fairmont Orchid, Hawai'i.
